Norman board adopts 2027–28 calendar, adds one instructional day to meet likely new state minimum

The Norman Public Schools Board voted to adopt the 2027–28 instructional calendar after the district's calendar committee recommended adding one instructional day in August to comply with the anticipated House Bill 3151 requirement.
Holly Nevills (S25) told the board the committee surveyed 687 stakeholders (221 certified teachers, 155 support staff, 50 administrators, 155 parents and 14 students) and recommended starting school one day earlier in August so the district could meet the likely new minimum hours/days while preserving traditional breaks and expected calendar features.
Nevills explained the committee considered where to add time and opted for a single day in August to meet the new state minimum for instructional hours and days while keeping teacher planning, holiday and other community expectations intact. Board members asked about how playoff schedules for high school athletics might affect the calendar; staff said safety and traffic near university events remain factors when scheduling days off.
The board approved the calendar in a roll call vote.
