Desert Recreation District reports expanded summer programming for Cathedral City parks

Cynthia Marchecho, the Desert Recreation District liaison for Cathedral City, told the Parks and Community Events Commission that DRD delivered “over 15 programs over the last 4 months serving over 273 participants” and supported eight community events.
Marchecho said the most popular activities were pickleball (about 107 participants) and ball programs (about 90 participants), and highlighted youth soccer, basketball clinics and an aviation STEM partnership with the Palm Springs Air Museum. She said DRD is working to broaden programming options — including indoor fitness and family classes — after some outdoor fitness classes drew limited interest.
Marchecho described progress on facility partnerships that would let DRD expand indoor programming if approved. She said DRD is nearing completion of a shared‑use agreement with the Cathedral City Senior Center, which the district will take to its board next week, and is also negotiating with the Salvation Army Davis Center; if the Davis Center agreement is delayed, DRD plans to relocate programs to the senior center or the Mary Pickford Theater.
Commissioners asked about locations and outreach; Marchecho said bocce is currently offered at Franza Park and Century Park and that rugby and larger field uses have taken place at Dennis Keith Soccer Park. She pointed commissioners to DRDs website (myrecreationdistrict.com) for schedules and said the district will continue to tailor programs to different skill levels and age groups.
The presentation closed with an invitation to collaborate on upcoming events, including the Esperanza Rising series, and with staff and commissioners thanking DRD for the report. The commission did not take formal action on the update.
