Town staff updates council on Schofield Farm site work and historic-preservation outreach

Kathy Krone, development neighborhood services division manager with Parks & Recreation, told the council that phase one of improvements at Schofield Farm is underway. She said ECI Site Construction Management is on site installing a public parking lot and detention pond south of the farmhouse, utility work including water and storm drainage is in the ground, concrete curbs and sidewalks are installed and asphalt is coming soon. "So far, concrete curb and sidewalks have been installed. Utilities including water, storm drainage, and electrical is going in the ground, and the site's being prepped for asphalt," Krone said.
Krone also described interior renovation work: the Kwanzaa Hut is being converted to a makerspace with new windows and slab work and CoCreate Erie is fundraising for interior equipment. Masonry repair and interior environmental cleaning are underway at the big barn, where A and M Renovations is leading exterior masonry repairs and barn-floor work.
A representative of the Historic Preservation Advisory Board (HPAB) gave a brief overview of the town's preservation work, noting local landmarks such as the Wise Homestead Museum and encouraging community support for advisory boards and the Erie Historical Society.
Why it matters: The site work will create public parking, venue services and a makerspace intended to support community events and nonprofit programming. Preserving and reusing historic structures is a stated town priority and investments at Schofield Farm are part of that effort.
What happens next: Krone said additional buildings may be deconstructed for reuse and staff will continue permitting and construction through the coming months.
