Preservation group asks Fullerton trustees to back landmarking of 'Flight' sculpture; board agrees to agendize

Ernie Kelsey, speaking for Fullerton Heritage, asked the Library Board of Trustees to support a local landmark nomination for the public sculpture known locally as "Flight," commissioned in 1976 and completed in 1978. Kelsey said the group has submitted the nomination through the city manager and expects the Planning Commission to consider it on May 13. He encouraged board involvement in a potential rededication and said the group has discussed cleaning, lighting and more accessible edging and signage for the piece.
Kelsey said the original project included board funding — the library board allocated money in the 1970s for the sculpture’s fabrication and lighting — and that Fullerton Heritage is seeking community support for signage and preservation work. "We've already met with the city about cleaning it up, redoing the lighting, making it a little more accessible," Kelsey said.
Trustees moved to agendize the Flight sculpture for a future meeting so members can evaluate options and potentially provide a letter of support or take part in rededication plans. The motion to place the item on the agenda carried in roll-call (one absence). Trustee speaker 5 made the motion and speaker 11 seconded; the clerk read the roll call showing one absence and multiple affirmative votes.
Next steps: Board staff will agendize the item for the next meeting and may discuss funding, signage options and participation in a rededication ceremony prior to the city's Planning Commission review.
