The commission recommended several targeted changes driven largely by citizen requests: restricting parking on the north side of Water Street while opening the south side to on‑street parking to improve sight lines and add about four spaces; removing up to three parking spaces at Barton Avenue/Parkfield to address visibility; restricting parking on parts of Seventh Avenue and Hickory and adjusting parking on other local streets; and installing stop signs in new subdivisions and improved sight lines rather than a four‑way stop at 8th Avenue and Cedar Street. The commission plans to bring ordinances forwarding these traffic manual amendments to a future council meeting.
In the administrator's report, a staff member said the city is drafting an e‑bike ordinance after consulting police, parks, recreation and forestry to address safety and operational questions, and that 49 applications have been received for the vacant recreation supervisor position with an aim to hire by June pending interviews and pre‑employment screening.
A council member emphasized these parking changes were largely citizen‑driven and that most traffic safety commission items originate from stakeholder requests; the chief noted the pre‑arrival dispatcher instructions and police presence are critical parts of the local public‑safety response system.
