Board discusses Google Lens, AI guidance and device-refresh cycle as district tightens controls

Director of technology demonstrated Google Lens — an AI-enabled Chrome feature that can analyze a screenshot and generate step-by-step assistance — and described staff concerns that students might use the tool to complete homework without understanding material. He said the district maintains content filters and had briefly blocked Lens at the middle school during review; another district’s green/yellow/red staged approach (no AI at elementary, limited exposure at middle, broader use at high school) was discussed as a possible model.
The district also described its device cycle: kindergarten and grade 1 use iPads; grades 2–4 use Chromebooks through elementary; grade 5 receives a Chromebook for use through grade 8; ninth graders receive Microsoft business-like laptops with continued refreshes on a multiyear cycle. The district said it increased bandwidth districtwide and that E-rate funding supported recent switch upgrades.
Board members raised policy questions, including how public-facing administrative regulations will be published and whether moving fine policy details to ARs could obscure rules or fees; members asked that ARs be linked to policy pages for transparency. A teacher/administrator issue about migrating Dropbox content to OneDrive and preserving complex formatting was identified for follow-up by technology staff.
