City manager gives project updates on West Main, downtown streetscape and waterline work

At the March 23 City of Geneva council meeting, the City Manager provided a multipart infrastructure update covering West Main Street reconstruction, downtown streetscape work, and a planned Long Street waterline replacement.
On West Main Street, the City Manager said contractors resumed auxiliary work and expect two to three weeks of sidewalk, curb and ramp work that has not yet affected traffic; when primary reconstruction begins the city plans a temporary one-way westbound configuration for residential and business traffic between Lockwood and West Street with posted detours. "They're working on curves, sidewalks, driving ramps...we're still projecting to start this around early April," the City Manager said, adding that paving timing depends on the asphalt plant opening and weather.
The Appalachian Streetscape project on South Broadway includes stamped-concrete sidewalks and brickwork downtown; the manager said the phase-1 streetscape probable construction cost estimate is $900,000 and the CDBG-funded stormwater portion is $153,000, with a streetscape deadline of May 22 and an overall project deadline August 28. The Depot Street lot reconstruction (including bioswale and tree plantings) will be advertised for bids with a bid opening anticipated April 2.
The Long Street waterline replacement was described as targeted between Chestnut and Lockwood and expected to begin in early April. The manager said gas-line relocation by the gas company is needed first and that the gas company anticipated beginning that work the week of April 12.
The City Manager also announced better public access to project updates via a new 'Projects' tab on the city's website and promoted the comprehensive plan's final steering-committee meeting this Thursday and a public input event April 1 at Darkroom Brewery. He invited an Anchor Point presentation on a proposed community family services center at the 'blue house' in front of the high school to a future council meeting.
Next steps: administration will post project updates to the website, proceed with bid advertising where scheduled, coordinate with utilities for the Long Street project and continue public outreach for the comprehensive plan.
