Berkeley County recognized Mark Dirks as its 2025 Employee of the Year, praising his long service and leadership in the county’s Roads and Bridges department. The award was presented during the Committee on Special Operations meeting, where county officials read a biographical summary of Dirks’ career.
The council’s presenter noted that Dirks, who has been with Berkeley County since 2001, has served as the department director since February 2019 and led response efforts during the January 2025 winter storm that cleared hazardous roadways. Department heads credited Dirks with overseeing projects ranging from splash-pad openings to boat-landing renovations and with hands-on leadership in emergencies.
Cole Shirley, the emergency preparedness director, told the council that “During storms, Mark is always one of the first people that we call in when severe weather occurs. He remains a trusted partner in supporting emergency management and emergency services across the county.” Other department directors likewise praised Dirks’ communication, reliability and willingness to work alongside crews.
Accepting the recognition, Dirks thanked coworkers and said, “Thank y’all. It means a lot, but I can’t take all the credit. I couldn’t do it without them.” The council presented a plaque and invited Dirks’ family to join a photo and refreshments following the meeting.
The recognition came as part of a broader council agenda that included contract awards and budget items; council members said the award reflects the county’s appreciation for employees who lead during routine operations and emergencies. The reception and photo were scheduled to follow the meeting in the Supervisor’s Conference Room.
