Board hears request to maintain status quo for community hockey club; trustees seek consistent policy

"Their requests at this point primarily are to keep status quo," Superintendent Dr. Wiesman told the board, summarizing the club's position and noting the program currently has about 30 Warren students and historically received between $4,000 and $5,000 in district-related support and booster assistance.
Trustees thanked the coaches and said they valued the program's contributions but raised questions about treating the club differently from other community groups. One trustee said consistency and objective standards are needed to determine when the district should offer recognition or support; another raised supervision, background checks and insurance as prerequisites if the district extends special consideration.
No final policy was adopted. Dr. Wiesman suggested staff gather more information and return with options so the board can decide before the next school year; several trustees said they prefer an explicit program or policy that sets standards for which community groups the district will support.
