Senate Health Committee advances HB 14 to remove defunct catastrophic illness assistance from statute

Representative Stapp (House District 32), the bill sponsor, told the committee the measure “just repeals a program that, no Alaskan has participated in,” and said the Legislature removed funding for the program several years ago. He characterized the bill as a statutory cleanup to remove a program that is no longer active.
Chair Dunbar opened and closed public testimony for the second hearing and confirmed there were no public speakers either in the room or online. After brief discussion, Senator Giesel moved the bill “from committee with individual recommendations and attached fiscal note,” authorizing Legislative Legal to make any necessary conforming changes; Chair Dunbar asked if there were objections and, seeing none, announced that HB 14 moved from committee.
The committee paused briefly to sign the required paperwork. No roll-call vote was recorded on the record; the motion carried by unanimous consent with no objections noted during the session.
Under the committee’s action, HB 14 now proceeds as a reported bill with committee recommendations and the attached fiscal note. The committee chair said members should stay after the hearing to sign the committee report. The hearing was adjourned at 4:24 p.m.
