Supervisors reject proposal to change engineer's termination threshold; seek legal opinion on renewal mechanics

Other compromise motions — including increasing severance from six to nine months or replacing the earlier language with a majority threshold — failed for lack of a second.
Board members who opposed changing the threshold said the prior unanimous requirement reflected institutional stability and long service; members who supported change said they were seeking future governance clarity and stronger board oversight. Several supervisors requested a formal written opinion from the county attorney about whether the current contract automatically renewed in 2023 and about the legal consequences of unilaterally changing contract language without the engineer's agreement. The county attorney agreed to review the contract materials and return with a written opinion by the board's next meeting.
The board did not adopt contract changes at Tuesday's meeting. Supervisors acknowledged that, absent mutual agreement by the engineer, the county could be without a signed contract on July 1; they committed to follow legal guidance before taking further action.
