Council approves rezoning for 710 South Hawthorne and several city parcels to Historic Square

Assistant Community Development Director Rick Arroyo said the rezoning is a corrective measure that will allow the property owner to rehabilitate the parcel; planning commission recommended approval on March 24. The ordinance passed 7-0.
Ordinance 26-029 rezones several city-owned parcels near Truman Road/Nolan Road and Lexington/Memorial Drive to the Historic Square (HSQ) district to better enable redevelopment that meets the downtown square plan and associated design standards (facades, setbacks, signage, materials). Arroyo noted included properties such as the old City Hall building, police station and associated parking lots. Planning commission recommended approval; the council approved the second reading 7-0.
Next steps: zoning maps will be updated and redevelopment efforts can proceed with the design standards associated with HSQ.
