Board approves nearly $2 million cabling upgrade to speed campus networks

Lincoln Way CHSD 210 trustees approved a district recommendation to upgrade campus cabling, a project the district said will replace aging Cat5e infrastructure at Lincoln Way Central and Lincoln Way East.
Cheryl, the technology presenter at the meeting, told the board that much of the existing cabling is 20–25 years old and does not support the speeds available on newly purchased multi-gig network switches and wireless equipment. She said upgrading to Cat6a cabling will allow the district to take advantage of 10-gigabit-per-second capability and provide additional bandwidth for planned intercoms, digital signage, emergency alerting and other IP communication systems.
The district received three proposals and recommended the CDW/Great Line proposal for $1,982,901. The presenter said a significant portion of the work qualifies for e-rate reimbursement and the district anticipates receiving approximately $480,000 back through that program after project completion. Work is scheduled to occur between 04/01/2026 and 09/30/2027.
A board member asked whether West was already equipped with Cat6 and whether the cabling would be in place before October testing; administration said West already has Cat6 in much of the building and that cabling work is planned over two summers and coordinated with HVAC construction schedules.
The board voted to approve the recommended cabling contract as presented.
