County approves $115,000 amendment to fund assessment of Cold Spring Dam in Sauk River watershed plan

Douglas County commissioners approved a minor amendment to the Sauk River 10‑year comprehensive watershed management plan to fund an assessment of the Cold Spring Dam at the outlet of the Sauk River chain of lakes.
Danielle Anderson, the county water planner, told the board the assessment is estimated to cost $115,000 and is intended to identify sedimentation and structural issues; any future work to modify the dam would be addressed later and would require DNR approval. Anderson said the watershed plan funding would pay for the assessment and that the money would not be assessed to landowners.
Commissioners asked whether the estimate was a quote or an estimate; Anderson confirmed it was an estimate. A commissioner moved and the board approved the amendment. County staff said the amendment enables the use of watershed program funds for the study and that subsequent design or construction would be considered once the assessment identifies necessary actions.
The board approved the plan amendment by roll call vote; staff said they will contract for the assessment and report findings and any recommended actions back to the board.
