Atlanta parents press board for districtscreen-time limits and transparency on device use

Kita Jahnikou said parents are "in a digital fog" and urged the district to "define balanced literacy, establish clear district wide guidelines that prioritize physical books and handwriting over tablets in K through 5, provide families with a clear minutes per day average for device usage across grade levels."
Other parents from Beecher Hills and similar elementary schools echoed the request and asked the board to prioritize hands-on learning for early grades. Board Member Brooks, reporting for the policy committee, said she plans to propose a draft policy on screen-time limits at a future meeting and has heard community support for reinvesting in printed books.
Speakers requested data transparency on how devices are used and a district standard that prevents defaulting to tablets when developmentally inappropriate.
