Advisory panel outlines budget priorities for recruitment, equipment and apparatus replacement; executive session on contracts yields no action

Committee members identified several budget priorities for the 2026–27 cycle including: asking county council to review transport insurance, creating a dedicated recruitment-and-retention line item, and increasing the annual per-agency operating allocation from $60,000 to $80,000 (roughly 25%).

Chiefs and members discussed long lead times and high prices for apparatus: a modern two-door commercial engine was estimated at about $650,000 plus equipment and tankers previously cost about $518,000; procurement lead times of 24–36 months were noted. Members suggested lease-purchase financing as a possible approach to spread costs.

The committee agreed to form a truck-replacement committee including commission representation, a couple of chiefs, two members from the rescue commission and Chief Smith to develop replacement lists, specifications and rotation plans for engines, tankers, rescue vehicles and boats. "This is not just fire either — this is rescue vehicles, special rescue vehicles, boats, everything is on here," one chief said.

The committee later moved into executive session to discuss contractual matters related to Oconee County Emergency Services and fire contracts, noting the purpose was to inform recommendations to county council’s public-safety committee; upon return the chair stated no action was taken in executive session.

What's next: The advisory committee will forward recommended budget items and the replacement committee’s work product to county staff and council for consideration. Procurement timelines and pricing will guide final budget requests.
