Athens County W&S plans generator hookups, capacity assessment and aeration pilot

Water & Sewer Superintendent Oscar Carson briefed the board on multiple operational items on Dec. 23. Custom cables for a towable generator were ordered after staff discovered newer lift-station connector standards would not accept off-the-shelf leads. The cables will be funded from the department's operating budget and the new hookup will be color-coded to reduce connection errors during deployments.
Carson said an on-site assessment by consultant Nick Hammer is scheduled to evaluate treatment-plant capacity needs driven by New Marshfield flows and three proposed apartment projects on The Plains expected online around 2027; projected additional flows were described as approximately two million gallons per month and growth-related improvements would be offset by capacity fees charged to developers.
The board also discussed a proposed low-cost aeration device offered by a local entrepreneur; county staff referred the concept to RCAP for technical review and noted that retaining the device could require a Permit to Install from Ohio EPA. The proponent initially requested $2,500 to run a pilot; Carson said further due diligence is required before any funding decision.
Commissioners asked for a written report after the site visit and asked staff to bring any permit or funding recommendations back to the board for approval.
