Dog warden reports higher tag sales, proposes postage change and mailing option

Julie Shellhammer, the Allen County Dog Warden, presented the office’s quarterly statistics and reported that dog-license tag sales were up while non-renewals were down. Shellhammer told commissioners the postage cost for mailing tags would rise from the current $0.78 to $1.27 per license and presented two options to address the added cost: raise the dog-tag fee by $2.00 (allowed by the Ohio Revised Code within the February 1–August 31 resolution window) or require owners to supply a prepaid mailing envelope so the office would not absorb postage increases.
Shellhammer also provided a staffing update and said staff would meet with Apollo students to identify potential candidates. She noted planned updates to Avery’s Law relating to dangerous dogs; no ordinance or formal action was taken at the session.
Commissioners agreed to discuss the tag-postage/mail-envelope alternatives at the Dog Warden’s next quarterly update.
