Athens — Commissioners approved a $1,000 Athens County Together grant for Millfield Park improvements and discussed recurring log-jam debris at the Courier Street bike-path bridge during their April 7 meeting.
Planner Connor LaVelle described the Millfield Park grant as funding gravel to improve walking-path conditions in partnership with Dover Township trustees; the board approved the funding for applicant Rising Appalachia.
On the log-jam issue LaVelle said debris accumulates every 5–7 years after high water events and can obstruct flow and scour bridge piers. The board agreed to contact contractors for estimates to remove the current jam, identify a prior contractor for potential reuse, and consider long-term mitigation such as pier deflection structures, bank reinforcement or bridge redesign to reduce future debris capture.
