Committee approves wording changes and age range update for Brockton youth council ordinance

The ordinance committee on May 5 unanimously recommended favorably minor amendments to Brockton's youth council ordinance that correct typographical errors and adjust membership ages from 12–18 to 13–19.
Jasmine Bradshaw, Director of Social Services, said the youth council is already active under the mayor's office (now overseen by Director of Youth Affairs Clayton Barros) and typically recruits students via school referrals. The change in age range was proposed to better match middle‑school cutoffs and to avoid excluding students who are nearing graduation or turn 19 during participation. Bradshaw said the council organizes a yearly youth summit and provides students a platform to propose projects and policy ideas.
Councilors asked staff to invite the youth council to present at a future meeting so the committee could learn more about current work. The committee voted to forward the ordinance amendment favorably to the full City Council.
