City staff asked council to accept a federal reimbursable grant of $963,701 to support overtime, equipment and medical supplies tied to Marietta’s role as a FIFA practice facility host.
"We applied for the grant and was approved for a $963,701 grant," said City staff (Speaker 16), who described the award as reimbursable and noted the city will spend upfront and seek federal reimbursement for approved expenses. Staff said the scope would include police and fire overtime, equipment and medical supplies for events along the Franklin Gateway corridor and other approved World Cup‑related activities.
Council members asked how the grant period aligns with known team schedules and whether grant reimbursement would cover potential increases in human‑trafficking prevention work and related overtime. Staff noted Uzbekistan will use the Franklin Gateway facility beginning in late June (first match June 27) and that other teams might follow. The presenter said federal DHS/FEMA approvals will determine final eligibility for reimbursements and that staff will return with a detailed reimbursement plan and scope of covered personnel.
The grant item was presented for consent and staff said they would likely begin ordering reimbursable equipment upon acceptance. Council asked staff to confirm the grant period in writing and clarify what city personnel and event categories are eligible for reimbursement.
