Police to replace four patrol SUVs and four motorcycles; commissioners told funding sources

Britney Hart (public works director) said four police-explorer utility vehicles were quoted at $59,230.81 apiece and four Harley-Davidson Road Glide police motorcycles at $34,470.93 apiece. She reported the vehicle total at $236,923.24 and motorcycle total at $137,883.72. Hart said the purchases would be funded from the capital depletion fund ($211,405.04) and the police operating budget ($163,401.92); the city also received $71,317.50 in insurance proceeds for totaled units that will offset replacement costs.
Deputy Police Chief Goric defended switching back to Harley-Davidson motorcycles, saying modern Harleys are better financially and more serviceable locally than the BMWs previously used. He noted local dealer access and lower fully outfitted pricing as reasons for the change.
Staff said a budget-amending ordinance will accompany the procurement and that the items will be presented for formal action on the commission agenda.
