Subcommittee trims subjective language, backs revised school‑naming policy

The Springfield Public Schools Legislative & Contracts Subcommittee voted to recommend to the full committee an amended policy governing the naming of schools and school facilities, after staff presented a redline incorporating committee feedback.

The policy changes include striking language that would have required a determination whether a nominee’s identity was “primarily of a religious nature,” removing an ambiguous “dedicated community service” criterion from the top rubric row to reduce subjectivity, and adding a procedural step requiring sufficient notice to school committee members so they can attend naming ceremonies, the staff presenter said. "The intent would be that they wouldn't be considered," the presenter said of candidates excluded under the removed provision.

Several members said they wanted the rubric to be as objective as possible and debated whether a subcommittee should complete the rubric or whether a special full‑body meeting should be held so all members can participate. "If we just do a special meeting, we're all there," one committee member said, urging transparency and participation. The subcommittee agreed the building and maintenance subcommittee would screen initial criteria and then forward nominations for a full‑body rubric completion.

Attorney Keith advised that the changes be made clear on the record or returned as a revised draft; the panel recorded the list of substantive edits before voting. Chair Crawford called the roll and the motion passed; the subcommittee will present the amended policy for final action by the full school committee.

The measure now goes to the full committee for final approval; staff said they will produce an edited draft showing the exact language changes for public review.
