Parks committee accepts donations and approves budget amendment; Larry Sieminski Park ribbon cutting planned

The Parks, Recreation and Facilities committee approved a consolidated budget amendment to accept three items of revenue and increase corresponding expenditures: $2,750 in special-event sponsorship revenue, a $10,000 Georgia Recreation and Park Association award (first installment $2,401.33) and reimbursement from the Friends of Elizabeth Porter Park for work at Elizabeth Porter Park. The amendment was made and seconded and approved by voice vote (motion passed 3–0).
Parks staff provided a detailed update on Larry Sieminski Park, saying irrigation and restroom infrastructure are operational though the restroom will remain closed until the ribbon cutting. Staff reported playground safety mulch was installed and benches, trees and signage are in place; the picnic shelter and light poles have been delayed, and staff will provide a tent for the ribbon cutting in place of the shelter. A ribbon-cutting date was announced: Monday, May 4 at 1:00 p.m.
Staff also presented the quarterly recreation facilities report for Custer Park Sports & Fitness Center, Elizabeth Porter Sprayground and Franklin Gateway Sports Complex, noting an 11% increase in gross revenue at Custer Park compared with the prior year and a current year-to-date revenue figure for the complex area of approximately $389,000 versus $370,000 at the same point last year. Staff said the Elizabeth Porter sprayground passed inspection and will open weekends in May, then full-time when school is out.
What’s next: The committee approved the amendment and the spending authority to receive the grants and donations; staff will proceed with scheduled park openings and final close-out reporting as required.
