Staff told the board that the request would exceed the city code provision allowing one additional wing-style parking space no greater than 10 feet in width. "They're requesting a variance from chapter 165.07 subsection 382a," the staff member said, noting the lot is just over half an acre and the addition would add about 500 square feet of impervious surface. Notices were mailed to neighboring property owners on 04/21/2026.
The applicants said the extra width was sought to ease parking for multiple young drivers. "We've got 3 young ones," one applicant said, arguing the larger pad would prevent cars from blocking the garage and make trash handling easier.
A neighbor who lives across the street spoke in favor, saying the layout of the cul-de-sac limits available on-street parking and can create a bottleneck when multiple households have teen drivers.
A board member moved to approve the variance 'as proposed' and a second was recorded, but the roll call failed and the motion did not pass. Members confirmed that approval requires three of five affirmative votes. The motion outcome was "failed."
