Board hears updates on teacher-contract talks, budget timeline and committee-operation policy

The chair told the board that negotiations on the teachers’ contract are progressing and that Act 93 negotiations have begun, expressing confidence both will be settled before the end of June. The chair also said the district currently has 13 open positions posted on the website.

Mister Wilson, from the business office, said staff is preparing a proposed 2026–27 budget that will be presented next week and must be passed within 30 days of the proposal; he added the district invested short-term funds at Fidelity Bank to generate additional interest income.

On governance, the board considered committee-operation guidelines that state committees should not deliberate toward official action outside publicly advertised meetings. Board members questioned whether committees are intended to deliberate toward recommendations; Attorney Messinger and staff said committee discussions can formulate recommendations but formal action must occur in public meetings and agreed to revise confusing language in the draft.

Board member Khaboski flagged policy item 49 (an AI-related policy) as a first reading; staff credited Anthony (technology director) with significant contributions to the draft. The board asked staff to clarify whether committee chairs must provide written reports in agenda materials and whether written distribution to all trustees is required.

Near the meeting's end, a member moved to adjourn; the motion was seconded and the chair closed the session. No formal votes on contracts or policies were taken during the work session.
