Mayor Chris Hart and commission members said the sculptures are a distinctive welcome feature for people entering Ivins from the west and expressed personal appreciation for the artist’s decades-long career. The mayor said the city would present the artist, Lyman Whitaker, with a check as a symbolic acknowledgment of the community-funded purchase.
Commission representatives singled out volunteers and local partners for organizing donations and documentation of gifts, and they thanked artists and businesses that contributed items to the silent auction. The presenter said the auction’s proceeds pushed the campaign “over the top” and called the outcome “heartwarming.”
The council did not take formal action on the purchase because it was privately funded; the mayor and staff indicated the city will continue to support community arts efforts and public events that showcase local artists and volunteers.
