Planning commission urges finishing comprehensive plan; flags parking and zoning work

A representative of the Planning Commission summarized the panel’s 2024 workload and told the Town Council on Jan. 13 that completing an updated comprehensive plan is the commission’s primary focus for the first half of 2025.
"We spent a lot of time working on the comp plan… public outreach at the beginning of the year," the commissioner said, recounting stakeholder outreach efforts including a "pancakes with planning commissioners" event, targeted outreach to other boards and commissions, and a public comment period in late spring and early summer.
Commissioners also reviewed the draft parking study and provided multiple rounds of feedback, examined accessory living units and prepared eight recommendation memos for council in 2024 (including final items related to the new public library and several lot line and consolidation matters). The commission reported nine recommendations to the BZA last year, mostly about in‑home daycares.
Council members praised the commission’s careful review work and urged staff and commissioners to maintain momentum. Councilmember Chuck said a completed comp plan would pair with the town’s new zoning ordinance and strategic plan to form "a wonderful toolkit" for future decisions. The town manager and planning staff said the council should expect a draft and public hearing process; one scheduling option mentioned was May 12, 2025, though staff and commissioners noted that schedule might be tightened and could slip into later meetings.
