Superintendent Don Mendoza presented a resolution asking the regional superintendent to certify a countywide 1% school facility occupation tax question for the November 2026 ballot. Mendoza said the tax is voter-approved countywide and intended to fund school facility projects such as renovations, construction and infrastructure; operating salaries are generally excluded except for narrowly specified ballot language that could include mental-health professionals or school resource officers.
Using recent enrollment figures, Mendoza said a countywide 1% tax would generate an estimated $121 million, with Round Lake's share projected at more than $6 million under current enrollment calculations. He noted that the resolution authorizes certification to the county clerk to place the question on the ballot but that the measure will appear only if school boards representing at least 51% of county enrollment also approve similar resolutions.
Board members discussed timing and community education; Mendoza said the authorization deadline is late August but superintendents were asked to consider action in May to allow time for coordinated education efforts. On a roll-call vote the board approved the resolution; Board President Francisco was recorded as No while the motion still carried.
