Public works staff told the council that the city’s street sweeper — a five-year-old unit with roughly 3,500 hours — needed significant repairs. The manufacturing shop initially estimated $32,000 in work but the superintendent said he negotiated the price down to about $23,000.
The superintendent asked for authorization to send the sweeper to the manufacturer’s shop in Ankeny and requested council approval to cover the repair cost and to authorize up to $25,000 if the final bill exceeded the estimate. A council member moved to proceed and the motion was seconded. The clerk called the roll and the motion passed.
Council members noted the sweeper’s importance to street maintenance and accepted the negotiated cost as prudent given increased labor and parts for a heavily used piece of equipment. Public works will proceed with the repair and report back if costs exceed the authorized amount.
