Minocqua to petition Oneida County to designate three roads as county highways citing high future repair costs

The Minocqua Board of Supervisors voted April 8 to partner with the Town of Lynne in petitioning Oneida County to designate Squirrel Lake Road, Pine Lake Road and Willow Road as county highways.
Bob Almenkinder, Oneida County District 19 board member, told the board the roads carry heavy logging traffic and that county stumpage revenue supports maintenance on county land; designating the roads as county highways would increase eligibility for certain grants. Director of Public Works Mark Pertile estimated future repair and reconstruction costs for the roads could exceed $10 million, arguing the town would benefit by not bearing those costs.
Supervisor Fried and Almenkinder, both on the county highway committee, acknowledged likely county resistance but said they will advocate for Minocqua and Lynne. The board moved to submit the petition to Oneida County and to request the roads be listed as a priority for future improvements; the motion passed by voice vote.
