Policy committee moves multiple minor revisions forward; threat-assessment MOU and device policy discussed

Committee chair Dr. Averley said the April 27 policy committee meeting considered revisions to policy 1.40 related to district responsibilities for charter school students, and policy 8.10 to provide free transportation to eligible charter students within a 10-mile radius and to align charter transportation to the charter school calendar. Dr. Averley told the board the committee agreed to move both policies forward as single-read items.
Dr. Averley also outlined updates to the district audit policy (6.19) to reflect a shift in certain oversight responsibilities from the auditor general’s office to the Pennsylvania Department of Education while keeping the district’s annual independent audit and AFR filing schedule.
On student health policies, the committee moved policies 2.10 and 2.10.1 forward, updating terminology by replacing "auto injector" with "epinephrine delivery system" and clarifying that students may self-carry certain emergency medications such as inhalers and epinephrine; administration of other medications will continue to be handled by school nurses.
The committee reviewed revisions to threat-assessment policy and an accompanying memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Springfield Township Police Department aimed at aligning to the Pennsylvania school code, clarifying threat-assessment teams, routing emergency communications via Montgomery County 9-1-1 dispatch, and outlining coordination with law enforcement.
Dr. Averley said the committee discussed potential future changes to policies on electronic devices and staff dress, noting emerging concerns about wearable devices (smart watches, smart glasses) and their recording capabilities. "The committee agreed to move these policy items forward as single reads where applicable," she said, and noted some items remain for further discussion in upcoming policy meetings.
No public comments were recorded at the policy committee meeting; the next policy committee meeting was set for August (date to be determined). The board later adopted a slate of revised policies by single reading during the May 5 meeting.
