Development director outlines department priorities, housing portfolio and upcoming comprehensive-plan work

Randy Pfeiffer, the City of Wausau Development Director, gave a department overview at the committee’s organizational meeting, describing the Community Development Department’s three divisions—economic development, community development and planning—and the partnership roles that support the city’s redevelopment and housing work.
Pfeiffer identified staff and partners present or involved in the work, including economic development staff, the Wausau Community Development Authority (CDA) and outside partners such as the Wausau Chamber of Commerce and the North Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission. He said the Wausau CDA manages an affordable housing portfolio and administers the city’s Section 8 program, "We have about 300 vouchers as part of that," Pfeiffer said.
Pfeiffer described the CDA’s portfolio: Riverview Towers (149 units, 55-and-older or disabled), a terrace facility with 36 units for older adults, and approximately 46 scattered-site units across the city. He also previewed redevelopment work at 405 Southeast Avenue and said the city will begin the 10-year comprehensive plan renewal in 2026 with adoption targeted for 2027.
The director encouraged committee members to reach out to staff with questions ahead of meetings and said the department will present more detailed briefings on community development programming and planning projects in upcoming months.
Committee members thanked Pfeiffer for the overview and the meeting moved to adjourn.
