Superintendent reports First Stop Health launch, mobile dental clinic and expanded literacy screening

Superintendent Dr. Janet Womack updated the board on several operational and student-support initiatives at the Oct. 9 meeting.
Womack said First Stop Health, a virtual health platform for school division employees, launched on Oct. 1 and offers urgent care, primary care, mental-health services and nutrition support at no cost to employees. She also reported that the division submitted its FY25 annual school report to the Virginia Department of Education on Sept. 30.
The health services department is finalizing plans for a mobile dental clinic that will visit schools during October, November and December, she said. Womack also noted that the Virginia language and literacy screening was administered in grades K–3 for the first time in the 2025–26 school year and that screening was expanded to grades 4–8 for students identified at risk based on spring 2025 SOL test results to guide instruction.
She added that the human-resources department is planning the division’s teacher-of-the-year ceremony for December and that students participated in recent career-readiness events such as Roanoke Career Quest.
