Residents urge budget committee to spare Springfield Public Library as proposed cuts loom

Dozens of Springfield residents and library supporters told the budget committee on May 4 that proposed reductions to library services would have outsized community impacts.

Multiple speakers described the library as a de facto human-services hub that supports early literacy, student study space, tech help for seniors and downtown activation. Kelly Ackland, a library organizer, said the proposed reduction will harm students and small downtown businesses: "Please don't cut out the heart to save the body," she told the committee, calling the library essential for generations to come.

Library Director Emily David told the committee the proposed cut would leave staffing at the smallest level in nearly 18 years, force the elimination of most outreach programs and end dedicated teen programming. "We will be cutting programming, or some of our programming and we'll also be eliminating most of our outreach," David said.

Residents offered alternative budget suggestions: one speaker asked the committee to consider tapping the city's unrestricted reserve fund to maintain library hours; another urged rethinking tax incentives that favor development over core services. Speakers repeatedly framed the library as a social-service gateway for neighbors who rely on free internet, technology help and community programs.
