Superintendent reports RFP for architecture services, notes VDOE accountability results and data correction

Fincastle, Va. — At the Jan. 8 Botetourt County School Board meeting, district administrators outlined near-term procurement and accountability items and summarized recent maintenance and student-support activities.
Brandon Lee, director of finance, presented a request for proposals for architectural, engineering and surveying services; submissions are due Jan. 14, 2026. The finance department also presented December 2025 financial summaries and year-end results for 2024-25.
The division submitted its annual Maintenance of Effort report to the Virginia Department of Education and passed the test, the minutes state. The Virginia Department of Education released the first official results under a new school performance and support framework; Colonial Elementary School, Central Academy Middle School, James River High School and Lord Botetourt High School were identified as "distinguished." Greenfield Elementary was initially identified as "off track," but division staff discovered a calculation error in the data used for that determination and said they are working with the VDOE to resolve it; a correction was expected within a week, according to the superintendent's report in the minutes.
Operations staff reported completed repairs: broken water lines at Peck and Eagle Rock elementary schools were repaired in coordination with the Western Virginia Water Authority; sprinkler inspection work at Colonial Elementary was completed; fire-alarm repairs were made at Breckenridge Elementary and Lord Botetourt High School; and a malfunctioning wireless access point at James River High School was replaced. The minutes note that VA Smiles dental clinics were completed for the fall session, with more than 150 students receiving dental care across the division.
The board was also told that network servers at Reed Mountain Middle School, James River High School, Lord Botetourt High School and the school board office were replaced after reaching end of life, and that technology staff participated in a virtual education technology conference in December.
Board members were reminded of upcoming schedule items including a governance and planning retreat on Jan. 9 and a work session on Jan. 16.
