County administrator proposes moving farmers market to Tuscumbia's Spring Park; staff updates and local projects discussed

County Administrator Roger Creekmore told the Colbert County Commission on April 21 that he has discussed moving the county farmers market to Spring Park in the City of Tuscumbia with Mayor Billings and proposed that the county assist by contributing signage along Woodmont Drive. Creekmore said the market struggled at its current Sheffield location and that moving it to Spring Park could improve vendor participation if a written agreement is reached with the city.
Creekmore also reported personnel actions across departments: Christian Haney was hired as a Water Clerk effective April 20 with a starting salary of $35,755.20; Brandon Harrison will be hired as a mechanic effective May 1 with a starting salary of $36,046.40; and Justin Franks, Jessie Hunt and Nathan Garrison were promoted to Step 1 foreman in the Road Department effective April 16. Creekmore reminded commissioners of the Celtic Festival scheduled for May 9 at Belmont Mansion and noted ongoing coordination efforts with local officials.
Chief Engineer Jeremy Robison said summer mowing will begin next week and described a contractor's herbicide test on a 20-mile section used to assess whether spraying three times per year could reduce summer mowing needs; he said he will report results at the end of next summer. Robison also reported that pavement markers and updated maps were expected to arrive within the next week or two.
Commissioner Barnes emphasized planning for growth along the river and coordinating with the Tennessee Valley Authority on Reservation Road; he said an overpass project handled by contractor Volkert is about 30% complete. Commissioner Bendall said the Colbert County Community Development Committee funded a first-of-its-kind safer-place shelter led by Cowboy Church of Colbert County with a $20,000 grant to protect citizens during severe weather. Commissioner Tyrus Mansell noted courthouse lighting and Children's Awareness Month activities this week; Commissioner Tori Bailey reported safety work at Leighton Training School and said the county will delay placing reflectors on Sockwell Road until paving occurs next year.
The commission approved a change to move the May 5, 2026 meeting to April 30, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. and directed the county administrator to post required notice.
