Shelby County Commission appoints TJ Hardaway as interim Tennessee House representative for District 93

The Shelby County Commission voted to appoint TJ Hardaway as the interim representative to the Tennessee House for District 93 during a regularly convened meeting.

The commission announced Item 1 from the General Government Committee, a resolution to fill the District 93 vacancy sent from committee without recommendation. After the parliamentarian read Permanent Rule of Order 35 governing nominations and roll-call voting, the commission voted to suspend the speech portion of the rules so nominations could proceed without nominee speeches.

Commissioners nominated three candidates from the floor: TJ Hardaway, Terry Gray and Alexis Miller. The clerk conducted the roll-call selection and reported a tally of seven votes for Hardaway, one for Gray and two for Miller. The chair then announced that Hardaway had received a majority and would be appointed. The body approved the appointment by acclamation.

After the appointment was confirmed, TJ Hardaway addressed commissioners, thanking them and reflecting on his family and ties to Memphis. "Thank you, Commissioner Wright," Hardaway said as he acknowledged several commissioners and expressed that he was "overwhelmed" by the appointment.

The meeting record shows the parliamentarian cited the commission's permanent rule for appointments (Permanent Rule of Order 35) as governing the nomination and selection process.
