Waukee council awards earthwork contract for public safety building renovation

The Waukee City Council approved plans and awarded the contract for bid package 13 — earthwork and utilities — for the Waukee public safety building renovation at 1300 SE La Grant Parkway.
City staff reported three bids were received; the engineer’s estimate for the package (including an alternate) was $410,142. Staff said the low bid, from Kelly Kordom Inc., was approximately $405,580, about 1.1% below the engineer’s estimate, and recommended awarding the contract to that bidder. Council voted to approve the resolution awarding the contract.
When asked by a resident whether federal funds were attached to the project, staff (Brad) replied there is no federal money for the bid package and that the project is being paid for with local option sales tax; staff noted some small rebates tied to sustainability measures but said those do not cover the facility cost.
Staff indicated prior work on other bid packages had proceeded and that this contract will allow progress on paving and associated infrastructure related to the renovation project. The resolution approving plans, specifications, form of contract and estimate of cost also passed at the same meeting.
Council members voted in favor of both the resolution approving plans and the resolution awarding the contract.
The contract was described in staff presentation as meeting the city’s procurement requirements, and staff said the low bidder has worked with other area municipalities; specific contractor references and final contract documents will be maintained in the city clerk’s office.
