The Augusta City Council approved a resolution authorizing the use of cemetery endowment funds to purchase and install two columbaria at Elmwood Cemetery.
Staff explained the city maintains an endowment fund for cemetery upkeep; when spending would draw principal rather than interest, the council must approve a resolution. Quotes obtained for two columbaria totaled about $16,298 and foundations were quoted at about $4,300, producing a combined authorization request of $20,598.
Staff and the cemetery superintendent said the columbaria have generated community interest and that sales of niches are expected to replenish the fund over time. Staff said the city will also update fee schedules and software mapping to track niche sales and record genealogical information for purchasers.
Council approved the resolution by voice vote. Staff said they will return with a revised fee schedule to account for engraving, additional lines, and related service fees.
Why it matters: The council authorized use of endowment principal for an expansion that staff said will provide additional burial options and a potential revenue stream to sustain future columbarium builds.
