Brookhaven council adopts sponsorship policy, adds corporate-registration requirement

On March 24, 2026, the Brookhaven City Council voted to adopt a formal sponsorship policy intended to standardize how the city evaluates and approves sponsorship requests from nonprofit and local organizations.

The resolution, introduced by city staff, sets an application-based process for sponsorship requests and requires documentation for eligibility. Mayor Pro Tem John Fanny successfully asked that the application specifically include state incorporation information; the council directed staff to add corporate registration or state incorporation verification to the application materials. "That will be considered as part of the application," the staff presenter said when describing the change.

Council member (District 2) moved to adopt the policies with that amendment; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. During the discussion council members framed the policy as a step to professionalize city support for community groups. As one council member put it, "this is a really nice way to streamline the way that we support community organizations or tax-deductible 501(c)(3)s that serve the Brookhaven community." The adopted policy will require applicants to submit corporate or state-incorporation documentation as part of the application package; city staff will update the online application and notify potential applicants of the change. The resolution does not itself appropriate funds; it establishes an administrative process and application requirements for sponsorship decisions.

The council approved the resolution by voice vote and moved on to other agenda items. The city clerk and staff will implement the application change and advise the council if additional ordinances or budget actions are required.
