The Board approved a contract with Open Hand Atlanta to provide home‑delivered meals for Rockdale County seniors at an estimated $4.95 per unit, not to exceed $86,835 for the contract term June 1, 2026–May 31, 2027. An Open Hand representative described the organization’s medically tailored meals and nutrition services and emphasized available dietitian counseling.
Christine Carney, identified by the chair as the county director responsible for senior services, explained that seniors must register with the senior center to be assessed for meal eligibility; staff place eligible clients on a waiting list when demand exceeds capacity. Carney said deliveries are performed by senior center staff and occur two or three times per week depending on scheduling; volunteers are not currently used for delivery because of client‑information requirements.
Commissioners discussed an expansion of senior center hours and facilities (a proposed south‑side senior center extension) that could increase capacity. The board voted to ratify the contract as part of the contract package approved at the meeting.
Staff noted senior program details will be available via the senior center and county information channels; citizens were encouraged to contact the senior center for eligibility and enrollment instructions.
