Athens County commissioners elect Eliason president, set 2026 schedule and board assignments

ATHENS COUNTY — The Athens County Board of Commissioners unanimously elected Commissioner Lenny Eliason president for 2026 and named Commissioner Charlie Adkins vice president during its organizational meeting on Jan. 12, 2026.
Commissioner Charlie Adkins moved to nominate Eliason as President Pro-Tem and later moved the formal election; Commissioner Chris Chmiel seconded both motions. All votes on the organizational items were unanimous. The board also approved the meeting agenda for the session.
The board voted to continue regular commission meetings at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesdays for 2026, but moved four dates to the following Wednesdays: the Feb. 24 meeting to Feb. 25, the May 26 meeting to May 27, the Sept. 8 meeting to Sept. 9 and the Oct. 13 meeting to Oct. 14.
Commissioners approved an amended list of 2026 duties and appointments. The minutes list numerous board and committee assignments, naming Commissioner Eliason as president with specific appointments and naming alternates for several regional and county boards and commissions, including the Buckeye Hills HVRDD General Policy Board, Investment Advisory Board, Land Bank, Tax Incentive Review Committee, One Ohio Opioid Region 10 and others. The minutes also record that all three commissioners will oversee county departments including the Water and Sewer Department, Maintenance, 9-1-1, EMA, EMS and the Records Center.
The board adopted the county holiday schedule for 2026, which lists New Year's Day (Jan. 1), Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 19), Presidents Day (Feb. 16), Memorial Day (May 25), Juneteenth (June 19), Independence Day observed July 3, Labor Day (Sept. 7), Columbus Day (Oct. 12), Veterans Day (Nov. 11), Thanksgiving (Nov. 26–27), Christmas (Dec. 24–25) and New Year's Day 2027 (Jan. 1, 2027).
