Council approves July 4 ‘Freedom 250 Years America Strong’ permit including musket demonstration

Lee Greene asked the Council to approve a Special Events Permit for July 4 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to hold "Freedom 250 Years America Strong" at Sparkman Civic Center, Sparkman Park and the soccer fields. The request included six food trucks and a musket demonstration by the Sons of the American Revolution; Mr. Greene said the group is trained and approved by the National Park Service, will use no projectiles and intends to fire muskets over the park pond.
Council Member Mike Swafford moved to approve the Special Events Permit and to add approval for the musket firing (which was not in the original permit application); Council Member Virginia Alexander seconded and the motion carried by unanimous voice vote. The permit will proceed subject to the event organizer’s compliance with insurance and safety requirements.
