Mayor Missy Evans reviewed the architect’s preliminary budget for a combined Library and Event/Venue Center and asked the Council to approve the proposal to move forward in the design process.
The budget outline presented by the mayor included an estimated $9.8 million for construction costs and a total project estimate of $12 million when architect fees, construction management, site preparation and other costs are included. Council Member Virginia Alexander moved to approve the preliminary budget and Council Member Austin Baker seconded; the motion carried by unanimous voice vote.
Council President Dr. Charles Gill said he supported approving the preliminary budget but cautioned that later approvals for Parks & Recreation upgrades should be considered carefully when final project costs are set. The Council’s vote at this meeting authorized only the preliminary budget; final appropriation and any funding decisions will be taken in later budget processes.
