Montgomery staff seeks up to $25 million in Safe Streets grant to extend Selma‑to‑Montgomery trail

A council member asked whether the grant required a 20% local match. Staff replied, "It's match," and later confirmed, "Yes, sir," when the 20% figure was raised. City staff said the letter covers the segment from the Fairview–Elm Street intersection west along Fairview Avenue to the start of Mobile Highway and that future phases would extend further along Mobile Highway toward the interstate and Southern Boulevard.
Wesley, a city staff member working on the project, told council members the city has a master plan and a 10% design prepared by Alta and that the team is phasing the work to align funding and construction. "We got the master plan that we're working off of here with a 10% design on it," Wesley said; he also said staff would provide a phased breakdown and presentation slides to help the council understand timing and responsibilities.
Council members pressed for detail on phasing and funding sources. Wesley said the current application would extend the trail down Fairview Avenue and that identifying additional build grants would fund subsequent phases into downtown and along Mobile Highway.
No formal vote was recorded in the work session. Staff passed out the letter of intent for review and said follow‑up materials (a phase breakdown and presentation slides) would be provided to council members before the regular meeting.
