The Vienna Town Council voted Nov. 11 to grant Fairfax County the land rights the county needs to route a sanitary sewer segment through portions of Northside Park as part of Tysons-area capacity improvements.
Public works staff said the county requested 15,500 square feet of permanent easement and 8,000 square feet of temporary construction easement along a narrow corridor. Staff estimated the project would require removal of about 87 trees in the impacted corridor and recommended a 2:1 replacement ratio to replant trees in Northside Park. Fairfax County proposed compensation of $210,000 to the town to cover easement rights and replacement plantings.
During discussion council members asked whether replacement plantings would occur in the same area; staff replied the intent is to replant within Northside Park. Council moved to approve the land-rights grant in exchange for $210,000 and thanked staff for negotiating the package.
Practical effect: the easement will allow the county to proceed with construction required to increase regional sewer capacity serving the Tysons area; staff will coordinate tree mitigation and replanting plans with the Parks Department.
