Council introduces ordinance updating juvenile hearing board language, to consider approval next meeting

The council introduced an ordinance to modify charter language governing the juvenile hearing board after a request from the North Providence Police Department.
Jay Burlingame of the North Providence Police presented suggested changes and the council’s legal counsel said he had incorporated the recommended edits into a draft ordinance. "This is the introduction of that ordinance for consideration, following which if it is introduced by the council tonight, we'll be able to take action approving it at the next meeting," the legal counsel told the council.
Council members said the revised language addressed earlier concerns and noted that, once introduced, the council will need to approve appointments. Police representatives said the board will need two community members and that the council would be asked to approve nominees.
The council voted to introduce the ordinance; formal approval and appointments were left for a subsequent meeting.
