Ivins council launches study group to evaluate hiring a city planner

Planning Commissioner Pam told council the role should include evaluating land‑use impacts, environmental risks, and translating the general plan into implementable ordinances; she urged requiring AICP credentials and a master's degree for the position. Supporters said a dedicated planner would provide the proactive, interpretive capacity now missing from day-to-day operations. Critics warned against adding a costly, possibly bureaucratic position and suggested a consultant short‑term contract could accomplish immediate ordinance reconciliation.
Mayor and staff said the immediate next step is to define gaps and job functions. The council agreed to form a small working group (the mayor to lead, plus staff and council representation limited by open‑meeting rules) to draft a job description, examine org‑chart options and return recommendations, including budget scenarios, at a future meeting.
What's next: A small committee will inventory gaps in current staffing and produce options — including consultant, part‑time contract or full-time hire — for council consideration.
