Council backs AARP grant letter for crosswalk murals; declines to buy loaned sculpture

Ivins — The Ivins City Council voted Feb. 20 to provide a letter of support for a grant application by Ivins Inspired and the Arts Commission seeking roughly $24,000 to paint four high-visibility crosswalks to improve safety and intergenerational connections.
Tiffany Wynne, executive director of Ivins Inspired, said the application would fund four crosswalks near Vista School, Rocky Vista and the veterans' home and that the conservative durability estimate for the paint is five to seven years. "This project will help further the development of the Ivins Arts Corridor while enhancing public safety for students, seniors and veterans," she said.
Council members discussed maintenance and whether road resurfacing schedules should be coordinated with painting. Engineering staff said paint durability looked appropriate for near‑term use and recommended planning maintenance to match street preservation practices.
On a separate arts item, the Arts Commission recommended purchasing a Lance Ludlow sculpture currently in the city's art-on-loan program for $2,500, splitting the cost between RAP funds and city funds. Several council members expressed reservations about using general fund dollars and questioned whether RAP funds should be prioritized for the Arts Corridor; after debate, the motion to purchase failed on a recorded vote.
What's next: Staff will return information on art-on-loan removal logistics and options for acquisition or return to the artist; the grant application for crosswalk murals is due March 5 and the city will provide the requested letter of support.
